Trajectory of integration:
pixel creativity

The creative work of military artists can become part of the European cultural space.
The project “Trajectory of Integration: Pixel Creativity” is aimed at identifying practical mechanisms through which this integration can take place.
The creative work of military artists is a unique cultural phenomenon that has emerged from the full-scale war in Ukraine.
And it is not only about war — it is about states, experiences, and emotions.
It is about people.
These works are created directly in the conditions of war,
capturing the experience of our time through painting, graphics, literature, music, theatre, and other forms of creative expression.
The project “Trajectory of Integration: Pixel Creativity”
is implemented within the framework of the ZMINA: Resilience project, with the support of the IZOLYATSIA Foundation (Ukraine), the Malý Berlín organization (Slovakia), and in cooperation with the Trans Europe Halles network (Sweden), and is co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe Programme.
Co-funded by the European Union. The views and opinions expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.
We work with the creative output of military ar tists, providing a full cycle of preparation from material development to implementation:
collect materials and case studies of military artists’ work
select and structure them according to content and potential
interpret, connect, and shape them into coherent narratives
adapt them into formats suitable for presentation and implementation

Ukraine’s Military Tradition

The Ukrainian warrior’s inclination toward art and creativity has been documented since 1646.*

1646
2026
This year is associated with one of the earliest known depictions of Cossack Mamai — a figure that embodies both the warrior and the artist.
In this iconography, the Cossack is portrayed in a state of calm, with a kobza beside him, while his weapons remain an integral part of his presence. This duality forms one of the key models of Ukrainian cultural identity — the capacity for action alongside the ability to reflect on experience through creativity.

The image of Mamai is not a portrait of a specific individual, but rather a generalized figure embodying a way of thinking. Its visual language combines stillness with inner tension, reflecting a state of balance between war and culture. This very logic — not opposition, but coexistence — underlies contemporary artistic practices shaped within the military environment.
Today, the creative work of servicemen and women of the Armed Forces of Ukraine continues this tradition. Artists, photographers, musicians, and interdisciplinary practitioners do not cease their creative work during service, maintaining authorship as a form of presence. Their practice does not emerge after the experience of war, but directly within it, capturing fragments of reality and transforming them into coherent artistic expressions.
In this context, the project “Trajectory of Integration: Pixel Creativity” considers contemporary military artists as carriers of a continuous cultural tradition, where creativity is not an alternative to war, but a way of reflecting on it. The pixel, as a fundamental element of the project’s visual language, acts as a metaphor for a fragment of experience that forms a cohesive vision — much like the folk image of Mamai unites action, memory, and culture.

From deep history to the present day, Ukrainian warriors have been drawn to creativity — it is an integral part of the identity of the Ukrainian military.
